Home - Kuta Area

which includes, Kuta Beach, Tuban, Legian and Seminyak

Kuta is known internationally for its long sandy beach as one of the first favorite beaches discovered by tourist. This former Hippies' Paradise is still paradise for those who love sea, sun and sand. Besides the possibility of doing all sorts of sports such as diving, golfing, surfing and bungee-jumping, you can surely spend your money on shopping. Along the sea-side, you'll find plenty of shops and stalls. Life does not stop when the sun sets on Kuta.

There are plenty of restaurants and bars where you can dance and drink the night away and many renowned surfers who visit from Australia and around the world. as administratively a district and sub district/village in southern Bali, Indonesia. A former fishing village, Kuta was one of the first towns on Bali to see substantial tourist development, and as a beach resort remains one of Indonesia's major tourist destinations.

Kuta is now the center of an extensive tourist-oriented urban area that merges into the neighboring towns, it can be roughly divided into four areas: Seminyak, Kuta, Legian and Tuban. Kuta is the main centre of all the ongoing activities. Although the three other areas are becoming increasingly popular, these are still the places to head off for when all hotels and restaurants are packed in Kuta or when you simply want to have a change of 'scenery'. Legian, to the north, is the commercial hub of Kuta and the site of many restaurants and entertainment spots. Most of the area's big beachfront hotels are in the southern section of Tuban.

Legian and Seminyak are northern extensions of Kuta along Jl. Legian and Jl. Basangkasa. They are somewhat quieter suburbs with cottage-style accommodations. The next town north of Legian, Seminyak is more up market with mostly luxury accommodation and fashionable high-end restaurants and bars. The atmosphere is much more sophisticated and laid-back than Kuta, and the beach in particular is quieter during the day. Seminyak is also the high end spa and boutique shopping capital of Bali. Nowhere is the up scaling of Bali in recent years more obvious than here.

As the best beginning waves in Bali, Kuta Beach is the ultimate beginner’s wave. Complete with long sandy beach, plenty of people on hand as well as a surf rescue tower and jet-ski.

Umalas Stables is the most comprehensive riding facility on the island,  just outside Seminyak offers guided horseback rides twice a day—in the morning and at sunsets—on Seminyak Beach

The Waterbom water park is a great day's entertainment for all ages. It is very cheap by western standards and if you are in Bali long enough

Get around
Kuta stretches along the beachfront all the way from the airport to Legian, and small lanes lead from the beaches into the densely populated accommodation zone. To avoid traffic-related frustrations, the best option is a combination of walking in small lanes and using metred taxis or a rented motorbike for longer excursions.

What to see

Surfing, shopping & partying are the three main events in Kuta, and interesting attractions are very thin on the ground. The beach is of course very scenic here, if nearly always crowded.

  • Bali Bomb Memorial. This is a memorial to the 202 people murdered by the bombs on 12th October 2002, and is on Jl Legian opposite the corner of Poppies II. This is the former site of the old Paddy's Bar, and opposite the former site of the Sari Club, which is still an empty space, next to the Billabong shop

  • Beach offerings. In the mornings you regularly see Balinese people throwing offerings into the sea, especially when Nyepi is approaching. The best spot is the temple right next to the beach about 200-250m to the north of the Hard Rock Hotel.

  • Hard Rock Hotel is something of a tourist attraction and is definitely worth a look and the odd photo.
